2021 Nehemiah Service Retreat

“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.”—Mahatma Gandhi

Like Nehemiah in the Bible, our Nehemiah Retreat volunteers come together in sacred service to rebuild and restore the grounds and buildings of Unity Village for one week. The main part of each day consists of restoration and construction work, while evening programs provide time for inner restoration through spiritual renewal and fellowship. View the typical schedule.

Each Nehemiah Service Retreat focuses on a different work project. Volunteers should be able to lift objects up to 40 pounds, climb up and down ladders, and work on their feet for as many as seven hours each day, for four consecutive days, with scheduled breaks/meals. Work may include but is not limited to:

  • Painting (both interior and exterior)
  • Rebuilding stone walls
  • Repairing stucco surfaces of buildings
  • Landscaping

Unity provides each guest with complimentary room and board for the week in recognition of the service each volunteer provides during these retreats. We encourage sharing rooms whenever possible to ensure that we are able to accommodate everyone who wishes to serve in this way. Volunteers are responsible for their own transportation to Unity Village. The retreat begins at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday and includes dinner and orientation. You are welcome to check in to your room as early as 3 p.m. on that day. The retreat officially ends on Thursday evening. Friday is an optional day to stay and enjoy Unity Village.

Because of the limited space and physical requirements of the Nehemiah Retreat, each volunteer must submit an application:

Just click on the “Online Form” button below, fill out the form, and hit “Submit.” Your application will go directly to Customer Care for consideration. Please allow one business day for a response. You may also download the application using the “Download Form” button and return it to Unity Customer Care by fax: 816-251-3564, email: or by postal mail: 1901 NW Blue Parkway, Unity Village, MO 64065-0001.

See the full Retreat Calendar for other opportunities for spiritual renewal and growth at Unity Village.

Whatever method you choose to send in your application, our helpful and friendly Customer Care Associates are available to assist you by calling 888-377-0107, Monday-Friday, 7:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. (CT).

Nehemiah Group Registration Guidelines

  • If you have a group that would like to serve at a Nehemiah Retreat, please review the following guidelines: Group size is limited to 20 people.
  • Each member of the group must fill out an individual application.
  • Each member must be able to meet the physical requirements in order to participate (outlined in the application).
  • Nehemiah retreats fill up quickly, sometimes a year in advance. Plan to apply as soon as you have a group that would like to attend. We only have space on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Once the first 20 slots are filled, other approved applications will be added to the wait list.
  • Single accommodations at the hotel during Nehemiah are limited. Church groups taking part in a Nehemiah Service Retreat will be requested to provide rooming lists for shared rooms.
  • Our recommendation is that the group should not make group travel and hotel arrangements until all members have applied and been approved.

Action steps:

  • Designate a group leader.
  • Coordinate with your group to share rooms and prepare a rooming list for our Retreats team, due one month before the retreat.
  • The group leader should make contact with the Unity Retreats team at 816-251-3511, Monday-Friday, 7:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. (CT) to coordinate details.
